This changed with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, with Mario staples like Goombas and Koopa Troopas all roaming the map, and players were able to make use of them to get an advantage in battle. One quirk that JRPGs have is that enemy encounters during exploration segments are all randomly generated, with players having little to no control of what enemies will strike or when they’ll decide to. While Square Enix and Nintendo have not come together for another project as big as this, it definitely opened the doors for Mario to try out new genres. These days, Mario is seen in all sorts of different genres, even he even made his tactical RPG debut with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This came at a time when Mario was known only for its platformers (Mario Kart was only just released), and other sports-based spinoffs had not been created just yet. Speaking of subsequent games, without Super Mario RPG, we wouldn’t have Super Mario or the Mario & Luigi spin-off games.
